TFSA contribution room calculator for Canada

One question: what is my TFSA contribution room in 2026? Your birth year sets the ceiling; what you put in and took out sets the number.

Contribution room estimate

Every dollar you ever put in, across every TFSA you hold.

A withdrawal only returns as room the following January 1, so leave out anything you took out this year.

$109,000

$109,000 of lifetime room since 2009 − $0 contributed + $0 withdrawn before 2026 = $109,000

What this number assumes

Room starts in the first year you were 18 or older, and no earlier than 2009, the year the TFSA began. It accumulates for every year you were a Canadian resident with a social insurance number, whether or not you opened an account. The CRA's worksheet for your own room is on canada.ca.

Why the estimate can still miss your real number

Years you were a non-resident of Canada add no room, and this calculator does not subtract them. A withdrawal you made this year is not back yet; it returns next January 1. And the figure is only as good as the totals you typed, which is why the durable answer is a dated record of every deposit and withdrawal, not a one-time estimate.

If the result is negative, that is an excess

A negative number means you have contributed past your ceiling, and the CRA charges 1% of the highest excess amount for each month it stays in the account. The penalty calculator below prices it.

Questions about your TFSA room

When does TFSA room come back after I withdraw?

Room from a withdrawal comes back on January 1 of the following year, not on the day you take the money out. That is why the calculator asks you to leave out anything you withdrew this year.

I'm new to Canada. How much TFSA room do I have?

Your room starts on the day you become a resident of Canada, if you are 18 or older, and you get that year's full dollar limit, not a part-year share. Years before you arrived add nothing. The calculator starts from your birth year, so its figure can run too high for a newcomer.

Do I need to have opened a TFSA to have room?

No. The CRA counts each year's dollar limit toward your room even if you have not opened or contributed to a TFSA, as long as you were 18 or older and a resident of Canada that year.

What is the TFSA dollar limit for 2026?

The CRA's TFSA dollar limit for 2026 is $7,000. Your own room can be higher or lower, because it also depends on past years, your contributions and your withdrawals.
