What we collect

Two things we keep, and only two.

First, your email address, but only if you sign up to our list. That happens through MailerLite, which stores the address on our behalf. If you never sign up, we never get your email.

Second, basic visit data through Cloudflare Web Analytics. It's cookieless, the analytics product doesn't store your IP address, and it doesn't follow you across sites. We see things like "the privacy page got 40 reads this week", not who read it. (Like any site, ours is delivered through a network that briefly handles your IP address to route and secure the page. That is separate from the analytics.)

There's a third piece we handle but do not keep. If you buy the unlock, the email address you enter at Stripe checkout is used only to send you your unlock code, then it is gone from our side. We read it from the purchase to send you that transactional email, we don't store it, and we never add it to our mailing list.

That's the lot. There are no accounts on this site and no passwords (there's nothing to log into), and no card details ever touch hudsonbayfinance.ca. Stripe collects those directly on its own checkout.

Why we collect it

We use your email to send you the things you asked for: the free TFSA contribution-room calculator, product updates, and the odd note when a new post goes live. Nothing else.

We use visit data to figure out which pages people actually read and where they bounce. That's how we know whether a guide is doing its job.

What we don't do

We don't sell, share, swap, or rent your email address. Ever.

We don't run profiling. We don't retarget ads. We don't use Google Analytics, Meta pixels, or any cross-site tracker. If you've ever felt followed around the internet by a banner ad, that's not something this site does to anyone.

Who else sees your data

A short list of third parties, each with a strong privacy posture of its own.

MailerLite stores your email address and is the system that actually sends you the email. They process subscriber data on our behalf.

Cloudflare hosts this site and runs the cookieless analytics we mentioned above.

Stripe processes payments directly on its own checkout. Your card details never touch hudsonbayfinance.ca.

A transactional email provider sends you your unlock code when you buy it. It receives the email address from your purchase only to deliver your unlock code on our behalf. It is not our newsletter, and you are not added to any list through it.

Where your data is stored

The providers we rely on to run the list, serve the site, take payment, and send your unlock code all operate outside Canada. So when you join the list, when we load you a page, when you pay, or when we email your code, your personal data, including your email address, is stored and processed on servers outside Canada, under the laws of the places where those providers operate. Those laws can differ from Canada's.

We spell this out so the choice is yours. If you would rather your data stay in Canada, don't join the email list. You can still read everything here and use the calculators without giving us anything.

Your rights

Under PIPEDA, Canada's federal privacy law, you can ask us what we have on you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Email us and we'll handle it within a reasonable time. You don't need to give a reason.

You can also unsubscribe from any email we send you with the link at the bottom of that email. That's a one-click removal from the list.
